Congratulations on your acceptance to Graduate Studies at Â鶹´«Ã½!
We’ve outlined the steps between your offer of admission and first day of class below.
Please refer to your letter of offer and the email from our Â鶹´«Ã½ Officer for instructions and deadlines.
International students should note that a $5,000 tuition deposit is required at the time they accept their offer. This deposit is applied to their tuition fees after registration. Deposits can be paid via wire transfer.

Unless you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, you will need a valid post-secondary study permit to attend UW for longer than six months. Obtaining a permit can take several months, so submit your application as soon as you accept your UW offer. Students are advised to apply online for their study permit/visa, as paper applications could delay the process.
As a Designated Learning Institution (DLI), the University of Winnipeg is issued the DLI number O19147986012. (Please note that the number starts with the letter “O” and not zero.)
You may be asked by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) to provide UW’s DLI number when you apply for a permit or a visa.

Please note: All graduate students must submit a copy of their new or updated study permit to graduateadmissions@uwinnipeg.ca so their record can be updated accordingly. Students without up-to-date study permits on their records will have holds placed on their accounts. If you have not obtained a letter of introduction or study permit by August 31, please contact your graduate program chair for the next steps.
You have been sent an official email containing a username and temporary password which allow you access to . WebAdvisor is the system students use to access information on their student record. With this one system, you have access to almost everything you need to know! Some of the things you can do on WebAdvisor are:

Graduate Studies Policies and Guidelines
The Faculty of Graduate Studies Policies and Guidelines outlines your rights and responsibilities as a full- or part-time graduate student.
Full-time graduate students are students who:
- Are pursuing their studies as a full-time occupation;
- identify themselves as a full-time student; and
- plan to complete the program within the designated number of terms permitted for full-time students and do not exceed these limits.
In a one-year Master’s program, full-time students are permitted three (3)
terms to complete all degree requirements, plus one (1) additional term if they are doing a thesis. In a two-year Master’s program, full-time students are permitted six (6) terms to complete all degree requirements, plus one (1) additional term if they are doing a thesis.
Part-time graduate students are students who:
- Do not meet the requirements for full-time status; and
- plan to complete the program within the designated number of terms permitted for part-time students and do not exceed these limits.
In a one-year Master’s program, part-time students are permitted six (6) terms to complete all degree requirements, plus one (1) additional term if they are doing a thesis. In a two-year Master’s program, part-time students are permitted twelve (12) terms to complete all degree requirements, plus one (1) additional term if they are doing a thesis.
Note: Individual programs may have their own policies which prescribe a shorter period of time (fewer number of terms) within which full-time students must
complete their program of study.
International students are not eligible for part-time study.

To succeed as a student, you need to understand your financial requirements and plan accordingly.

Expenses
Your expenses include education costs and living expenses:

Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) requires at least $10,000 per year for living exenses for a single individual.(Review IRCC's ). However, your own requirements may increase depending on food costs, rent and lifestyle choices.
Income
Your income will include any awards, scholarships, and bursaries received, as well as employment income.

Student funding includes awards, scholarships, and bursaries from various sources.
Payment of Scholarships, Awards, and Bursaries
Graduate program tuition and fees are due at the beginning of each term (see Fee Overview). Each term, your student funding is first applied to your student financial account to cover any outstanding fees owing in that term (or previous terms, if required). If the application of this funding creates a credit on your you will be issued a cheque. Cheques are typically received in the second month of each term. Please ensure that your preferred address on WebAdvisor remains current throughout the year as this is the address to which your cheques will be mailed.
Default Funding Distribution
Unless a particular funding source requires otherwise, student funding is administered according to the default funding distribution. Please review the Award Payment Processes to understand how your funding will be distributed throughout the academic year.
On-Campus Housing
UWinnipeg's Campus Living offers a variety of residence options to suit your needs, including:

- Single and double dorms
- Furnished and unfurnished bachelor and one-bedroom apartment suites
- Family Housing

When renting a new apartment, students are advised to research the neighbourhood, landlord, and visit the site for an in-person inspection before signing a lease.
Phone and Internet
BellMTS, Rogers, and Shaw are Winnipeg’s largest internet providers. Bell MTS and Rogers also offer cellphone plans. Other cellphone provideers include Telus, Fido, and Koodo. Phone and internernet plans can vary and students are encouraged to compare providers before signing a contract. Some providers have back-to-school specials for students in August and September.
Banking
Scotia, CIBC, RBC, and TD Canada Trust are popular with the international students. Research before you sign up for the plan and be sure to inquire about student banking fees to get the best service plan. All these banks will a downtown branch, which can be found on this map.
Transportation
The is a universal bus pass program where all full-time UWinnipeg students pay a fee at the beginning of each term and receive an unlimited access bus pass for the Fall and/or Winter Term (September – December / January – April) at a subsidized rate.
Groceries
A sure-fire way to reduce your living expenses is to avoid eating out whenever possible. Try to cook healthy affordable meals and this should help you cut some expenses. You may hate your own cooking in the beginning, but gradually, this may change as you master some recipes. Who knows, you may even begin to invite your new friends to dinner. Sobeys, Safeway, NoFrills, Frescho, Superstore, Dino’s East and West Indian Food are some names you can Google for your grocery needs.
Electronics
There may be some student deals in August and September. Check out Staples, Best Buy or The Source for laptops, TVs, and other electronics.
Housewares and Furniture
Winnipeg has Ikea, Walmart, Jysk and other affordable stores to stock your new apartment with the essentials to make it home.
Depending on your student type and the length of your studies, you will be covered by different health insurance plans. To determine your health coverage and amount, please see: Health Insurance and UWSA Health Plan.
Please note that and UWSA Health Plan coverage are mandatory for all international University of Winnipeg students. Students will not be able to opt out.

Awards and Financial Aid
The Faculty of Graduate Studies isn't the only source of funding for graduate students!
Financial assistance administered by the Awards & Financial Aid Office supports the access and excellence mandate of Â鶹´«Ã½ through a comprehensive program of scholarships, awards, prizes and bursaries.
Appointments can be made by emailing awards@uwinnipeg.ca or calling 204-786-9459. They will be monitoring messages between 8:30 am - 4:00 pm, Monday to Friday.
