Hazard Recognition and Control Processes

Introduction:

As one of the components of the Safety and Health Program at Â鶹´«Ã½, the following will describe the various methods hazard recognition and control.

Objectives:

  1. Identify the hazard(s).
  2. Eliminate or minimize the risk of an injury/illness or prevent loss of equipment or property.
  3. Plan effectively to implement corrective actions, dependent on the risk level - subject to reasonableness and practicability where applicable.

Prevention is key to safety and health.

Methods of Hazard Recognition and Control (not inclusive):

  • Workplace Inspections with participation from the Workplace Safety and Health Committee Members
  • Inspections completed by authorized personnel external to the Company
  • Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) and Risk Assessment
  • Develop of Safe Work Procedures and/or Safe Operating Procedures according to the completed JHA and Risk Assessment

Control of Hazards is considered in the following sequential manner:

  1. Elimination or Engineering Controls: Elimination of the hazard by substituting to less hazardous chemical/process or by implementing engineered controls (a physical change in the task/job, installation of equipment guarding, or work environment).
  2. If the hazard cannot be eliminated through engineering controls, the hazard still exists and therefore needs to be controlled through some other means to ensure the risks are minimized.  This can include include administrative controls such as job rotation, development of procedures, training, etc.
  3. At times, dependent on the risks, in addition to the engineering, substitution and administrative controls, provision of personal protective equipment may be required.
