CHARACTER OF THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL

This is the introductory level of laboratory worker positions.  Incumbents at this level work under close supervision from a more senior technician or academic staff member and are generally responsible for cleaning and maintaining laboratories and their apparatus.  Supervision of other employees is not a requirement at this level, however, incumbents may be required to assist in the introductory training of other employees at the same level.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES WHICH ARE INTENDED TO ILLUSTRATE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL AND SHOULD NOT BE INTERPRETED AS A DESCRIPTION OF ANY ONE INDIVIDUAL POSITION WITHIN THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL
  1. Collects, distributes, cleans and sterilizes laboratory glassware, pots, utensils and equipment following instructions; performs acid cleaning if and when required and returns it to storage
  2. Collects or distributes materials within the University
  3. Operates washers, drying ovens, autoclave, balances, pipettes and moisture meters as required
  4. Sets up glassware in a laboratory following detailed instructions and makes notes of work completed
  5. Prepares and dispenses routine laboratory solutions and culture media following a prescribed formula or procedure
  6. Performs general dusting and cleaning duties in a laboratory, wash-up area, equipment storage area or greenhouse
  7. Does watering, misting, pruning and fertilizing of plants following detailed instructions
  8. Performs other related duties as required or assigned
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

The minimum qualifications required are:

Level of Formal Education

  • High school completion 
Experience
  • No experience necessary as on-the-job training is provided
  • or
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience
Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions 
  • Ability to relate well with faculty, staff and students
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to maintain cleanliness and safety standards
Physical Requirements
  • No allergies to detergent or other cleaning solutions
  • Capable of performing the duties as assigned
