CHARACTER OF THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL

In positions at this level, incumbents are responsible for shipping, receiving, recording, and processing incoming and/or outgoing shipments including complete documentation for a shipping/receiving area.  Incumbents, under general supervision, plan and carry out the daily work schedule independently, in accordance with established procedures.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES WHICH ARE INTENDED TO ILLUSTRATE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL AND SHOULD NOT BE INTERPRETED AS A DESCRIPTION OF ANY ONE INDIVIDUAL POSITION WITHIN THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL
  1. Receives, inspects, unpacks, stores and distributes goods, materials and equipment, ensuring safety and security
  2. Inspects goods against invoices and/or packing slips for shortages, breakages, etc., and initiates appropriate action, following-up with vendors for missing information or items and solving any problems possible
  3. Maintains records on items received, shipped and/or on order and keeps a computerized inventory system
  4. Prepares materials for shipment including processing documentation associated with inventory, registering and insuring shipments, C.O.D.'s and money orders, allocating charges, correspondence or claims for lost or damaged items, etc.
  5. Contacts and arranges for carriers, couriers and/or messenger services and discusses problems with them
  6. Assembles or performs minor repairs and adjustments to equipment received before distribution
  7. Stocks or shelves items, operates a computerized cash register and applies labels, etc. to items as directed
  8. Performs routine computations - ie: extensions of prices, price per item, discounts, exchange rates, etc., and prices items in accordance with established policies and procedures
  9. Ships, receives and handles fragile, heavy, live, dangerous or hazardous goods and is required to know and comply with appropriate health and safety procedures
  10. Trains and allocates tasks to other employees at the same or lower levels
  11. Provides back-up support to other positions as required or assigned
  12. Performs other related duties as required or assigned
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

The minimum qualifications necessary for acceptable (satisfactory)  performance are:

Level of Formal Education

  • High school completion with related options
Experience
  • Two years of directly related experience
  • or
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience
Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to relate well with staff, students and the public
  • Ability to maintain accurate computerized and manual records
  • Ability to plan and organize work assignments
  • Effective oral and verbal communication skills
  • Must be bondable due to access throughout campus
  • Must be in receipt of or be able to obtain a Certificate in handling and transporting dangerous goods and WHMIS training

  • Moderate to heavy lifting is required
  • Capable of performing the duties as assigned
