CHARACTER OF THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL

This is the entry level of library assistance in which duties performed are highly repetitive and routine, procedures and practices are clearly defined and limited judgement is required.  Incumbents are primarily responsible for assisting users in accessing works and collections and maintaining them in an organized manner.  Initially, duties are performed under close supervision, however, once trained, duties are performed under general supervision.  The supervision of others is not a requirement, however, incumbents may be required to assist in the introductory training of other employees at the same level.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES WHICH ARE INTENDED TO ILLUSTRATE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL AND SHOULD NOT BE INTERPRETED AS A DESCRIPTION OF ANY ONE INDIVIDUAL POSITION WITHIN THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL
  1. Collects, sorts and re-shelves books, collections and works that have been circulated or left in the study, reference or specialty areas of the library, placing them in their proper location according to call number
  2. Assists library users in locating books, collections and works and answers routine information and directional questions
  3. Pulls books, collections and works from the shelves for repair, placing on reserve, special displays, re-cataloguing and for other purposes
  4. Performs shelf reading to locate mis-shelved books, collections and works and re-shelves as necessary
  5. Records in-house circulation of books, collections and works
  6. Moves and/or relocates sections of books, collections and works when expanding stacks or storage areas
  7. Uses a book cart to transport books in the library and from storage
  8. Assists with annual inventory including checking books, collections and works to identify missing items and/or incorrect call numbers
  9. Photocopies printed material, dusts and vacuums book stacks, keeps equipment supplied, packs and unpacks books, may assist in inserting and removing security labels
  10. Performs other related duties as required or assigned
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

The minimum qualifications necessary for acceptable (satisfactory)  performance are:

Level of Formal Education 

  • High school completion
Experience
  • No previous experience is necessary as on-the-job training is provided
  • or
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience
Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to read and work with alphabetical and numerical filing systems
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, students and the public
Physical Requirements
  • Capable of performing the duties as assigned
  • Manual dexterity may be required
