Memorial Reckoning
On January 21, 2021, over 120 people from more than 20 countries and territories registered to participate in "Memorial Reckoning", an online conversation on monuments, memorials, and calls for justice, with speakers Prof. Jennifer Scott (The New School), Dr. Omeasoo Wāhpāsiw (University of Prince Edward Island), and Dr. Erin Millions (University of Winnipeg).
This event was co-presented by the Centre for Research in Cultural Studies (CRiCS) and the Critical Race Network (CRN) @ UW. Funding for this event was provided by the University of Winnipeg and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).
Prof. Jennifer Scott is an anthropologist, curator, public historian, and civic leader, whose work explores connections between museums, arts, place and social justice. She was recently appointed Co-chair of the City of Chicago’s new Monuments and Memorials Advisory Committee. She is also faculty at The New School in New York, where she teaches courses in arts and civic engagement, cultural anthropology, race and ethnic studies, and museum and global studies.
Dr. Omeasoo Wāhpāsiw is a nehiyaw iskwew (Cree woman) transplanted on the red soil of Epekwitk (Prince Edward Island, and traditional district of Mi'kma'ki), where she teaches at the University of Prince Edward Island in Education and Arts. Dr. Wahpasiw’s work on the use of space in Indigenous contexts, historically and now, has given her many opinions on the appropriate way to shape public and private spaces moving forward. Dr. Wahpasiw connects these and other thoughts to her own Indigenous world view and pedagogy.
Dr. Erin Millions is a historian of settler colonialism, childhood, material culture, and Indigenous histories in Canada. She is currently the Research Director for the Manitoba Indigenous Tuberculosis Photo Project (@TBPhotoProject) at the University of Winnipeg. Dr. Millions has been appointed to the newly formed Welcoming Winnipeg Committee of Community Members to review applications and make recommendations to City Council on the creation, removal, or renaming of place names and historical markers.
